John W. Kolwe Appointed 5th Circuit U.S. Bankruptcy Judge

John W. Kolwe was sworn in by the Chief Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Louisiana, Robert R. Summerhays, and serves in the Alexandria and Monroe Divisions of the Western District of Louisiana.
John W. Kolwe was appointed United States Bankruptcy Judge by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, effective August 12, 2015.  He was sworn in by the Chief Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Louisiana, Robert R. Summerhays, and serves in the Alexandria and Monroe Divisions of the Western District of Louisiana.  Judge Kolwe hears all matters in the Alexandria Division and Chapter 13 cases in the Monroe Division.
 
Judge Kolwe grew up in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. He received his B.S. in Accounting from Centenary College of Louisiana in 1985. While at Centenary, he was a member of the Centenary College Choir, and traveled and performed throughout the United States and in Asia and Europe. Judge Kolwe met his wife, Miriam, in the Choir.  Following graduation from Centenary, Judge Kolwe worked as a CPA with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co.
 
Judge Kolwe received his J.D. in 1991from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center. He practiced law in Lafayette, Louisiana from 1991until joining the bench. Most recently, he was a partner in the litigation section of regional law firm, Jones Walker LLP.  Prior to Jones Walker, Judge Kolwe was a shareholder with Longman Russo, PLC.  He began his practice in Lafayette with Onebane, Donohoe, Bernard, Torian, Diaz, McNamara & Abell.
 
Judge Kolwe has been married to Miriam for 28 years. He has two children, Kristen, who will be a junior at UL – Lafayette, and Kevin, who will begin his freshman year at UL – Lafayette this fall.
 
Judge Kolwe enjoys singing with community and symphony choruses and church choir in his free time. He also enjoys running.  The Kolwe family recently relocated to Alexandria.
