Press Release: Region II High School Mock Trial

LAFAYETTE BAR ASSOCIATION YOUNG LAWYERS SECTION
HOSTS ANNUAL RICHARD N. WARE IV REGION II HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION

On Saturday, February 29, 2020, the Lafayette Bar Association Young Lawyers Section hosted the annual Richard N. Ware IV Region II High School Mock Trial Competition at the John M. Shaw United States Courthouse in Lafayette, LA. Four local high schools participated in the competition, including Carencro High School, Early College Academy, Northside High School and Washington-Marion Magnet High School.

“The competition is coordinated annually by the [Louisiana State Bar Association] LSBA's Young Lawyers Division. It is named in memory of the Honorable Richard N. Ware, IV, who enthusiastically volunteered for nearly a decade as the presiding judge of the final round of the Louisiana High School Mock Trial Competition. This year's state case, State of Louisiana VS. Kerry Burton, was written by members of the University of Louisiana-Monroe Mock Trial Team.” Louisiana State Bar Association

The regional competition consisted of two rounds and a final round, with each team trying their case as both plaintiff and defense and portraying multiple roles including the attorneys and witnesses. Each round included a presiding judge, attorney scoring judges and volunteer time-keepers.

Participating schools compete at a regional level before moving on to the state competition, which will be held March 21, 2020 in Gonzales, LA. The two teams that advanced from Region II were Early College Academy Team I and Northside High School Team II. While Early College Academy Team I was the tournament champion, both schools will advance to the state competition. Winning the award of "Best Attorney" was Blaze Robin from Early College Academy and winning the award of "Best Witness" was Nakizha Broussard from Northside High School.

The Lafayette Bar Association and the Young Lawyers Section would like to thank YLS Mock Trial Committee members Ericka Richoux, Nick Jones, Sarah Brown and Jazmine Torres for coordinating the event.
