Get to know incoming LBA President Glenn Edwards
On Thursday, November 07, 2019, the Lafayette Bar Association will be installing its Board of Directors for the 2019-2020 term, including incoming president Glenn Edwards.
Glenn has been a member of the Lafayette Bar Association for many years. Although originally from Donaldsonville, LA, Glenn received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in May of 1984 and his Juris Doctorate from Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in May of 1987. Glenn is currently managing partner at the firm Davidson, Meaux, Sonnier, McElligott, Fontenot, Gideon & Edwards, where he has been practicing General Civil Office Practice including Commercial Transactions, Corporate Formation and Advice, Real Estate, Successions and related litigation for 32 years. During his career, Glenn has been active in the Jaycees of Acadiana and the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, where he has served as President.
Originally, Glenn was pursuing an undergraduate degree in medicine. “After a couple of years in biology, chemistry and math study I realized that I had a greater affinity for the courses of study which provoked independent thought and dabbled more in the gray areas rather than the hard and fast rules of math and the sciences. I also must admit that Organic Chemistry II was a game and career changer for me.”
Soon after receiving his JD, Glenn found a mentor in his friend and colleague, Jimmy Davidson. “Jimmy Davidson has been my senior partner and mentor since my first day at Davidson, Meaux 32 years ago. He has been a dear friend and affected my life both personally and professionally beyond measure. My law partners each in their own way provide inspiration on a daily basis. I am privileged to have had only one job in my career, and to have enjoyed it with many of my partners for the duration has been special.” Also providing encouragement and support were his parents. “My parents allowed and encouraged me to be a free thinker and master of my own life. My parents instilled in me by example to do unto others as I would have them do unto me. This is a principle I aspire to achieve in my personal life and endeavor to live up to as steadfastly as I can. Although I know it sounds cliche' I am who I am because of them and the unconditional love they have shared with me every day of my life.”
In the spirit of mentorship, Glenn would like to remind new attorneys: “We are all in this together; hopefully for the long haul. Professionalism, which I define as simple common courtesy and human decency, goes a long way in making the difficult journey our chosen profession challenges us with, every day,  survivable. This is a job; we need to define it, it does not have to define us. Also, we work every day to tend to the needs of others, don't lose sight of taking care of yourselves along the way.”
Weekdays are never very typical, but when Glenn is not in the office you can find him spending time with his family and friends hunting, fishing or cooking at his camp. The most important people in his life are his wife, children and grandchildren.  "They are my reason for living and the greatest gifts I have ever received."
You might be surprised to learn that Glenn went to Catholic School for 12 years and admits after the experience that he remains "afraid of nuns!”  His favorite movies: “I have been and remain intrigued, almost to the point of being bizarre, with the movie "The Silence of the Lambs." Each time I see it, I see something that I cannot believe I missed before." Although not his personal favorite, he confesses having seen "The Little Mermaid hundreds of times with my daughters when they were children and Frozen countless times with my granddaughters; nonetheless, those memories are profound and dear to me. I look forward to an additional favorite with my newborn grandson.”
