Legal Forms & Advice

While it is not a requirement to have a lawyer present or seek legal advice, hiring an attorney is always the best choice. Someone who chooses to represent himself or herself in court is considered a pro se litigant.

There are several resources available to pro se litigants:

The Lafayette Parish Law Library is located at 2607 Johnston Street in the Lafayette Bar Association office and is open to the public Monday - Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please note that the law library will be closed on all days that the Lafayette Parish Courthouse is closed. The library contains many law books for reference and free access to online legal research. Please be advised that no one in the office is able to give any legal advice or assist you with the forms that you may need. If you need assistance or have legal questions, please take advantage of our Counsel on Call program.

Lafayette Volunteer Lawyers Counsel on Call offers free 15 minute consultations with Lafayette Bar members who give their time as a service to the community. These sessions are only available Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. at the Lafayette Bar Office. Spaces are limited so arriving early is advised. The doors open at 8:30 a.m.
