About the Office: The United States Department of Justice, Office of the Deputy Attorney General is seeking an attorney with demonstrated experience in litigation and policy matters to be detailed to the Office of the Deputy Attorney General for a period of one year.
The Office of the Deputy Attorney General is responsible for advising and assisting the Attorney General in formulating and implementing Departmental policies and programs and in providing overall supervision and direction to all organizational units of the Department. The Deputy Attorney General is authorized to exercise all the power and authority of the Attorney General, except where such power or authority is prohibited by law from delegation or has been delegated to another official. In the absence of the Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General acts as the Attorney General.
Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The incumbent will work under the general supervision of the Deputy Attorney General.
This individual will advise the Deputy Attorney General on selected litigation and policy matters, provide recommendations and outline options and potential consequences; and serve as the Deputy Attorney General's representative in meetings within and outside of the Department. Among other duties, the incumbent of this position will:
– Provide advice, guidance, and legal expertise to the DAG and members of the ODAG staff on litigation and policy matters involving the Department.
– Be required to draw upon experience as a litigator, and on substantive knowledge concerning areas within the responsibility of the Department.
– Assist members of the ODAG staff in identifying and resolving legal and policy matters as they arise.
– Represent the Department and the DAG in internal and interagency meetings.
– Develop, coordinate, and execute special projects as assigned by the DAG or his designee.
Qualifications: The candidate must possess a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a state, territory, or the District of Columbia, and have relevant post-J.D. legal experience. A minimum of six years of legal experience and extensive experience as a litigator is required. Experience with litigation and policy matters is strongly preferred. The incumbent is required to work independently and must utilize sound judgment, discretion, and diplomacy.
